Automatic Assessment of Collaborative Chat Conversations with PolyCAFe
نویسندگان
چکیده
The wider acceptance and usage of instant messaging (chat) represents one of the consequences of undertaking Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) practices in formal education settings. However, the difficulty of analyzing these textual artifacts of learners in order to offer them feedback represents a serious problem in further extending the usage of chat conversations. PolyCAFe is a system that was designed to support the tutors and to provide automatic feedback for the learners engaged in collaborative chat conversations and discussion forums. The architecture of the system is presented by focusing on two key components: the assessment of the utterances and of the collaborative discourse. PolyCAFe‟s effectiveness has been proved in a validation experiment with students and tutors from a University course. The main findings from this trial, together with the conclusions of domain experts verifying the accuracy of the assessment provided by PolyCAFe, are also analyzed and commented in detail.

PolyCAFe: Collaboration and Utterance Assessment for Online CSCL Conversations
Students and members of communities of practice are often using online conversations to enhance their knowledge and skills. Although there have been a lot of efforts to find an efficient method for analyzing this type of discussions, most of the research has been mostly theoretical or has not been transformed into software due to technological limitations. This paper presents PolyCAFe, a system...
متن کاملUtterances Assessment in Chat Conversations
With the continuous evolution of collaborative environments, the needs of automatic analyses and assessment of participants in instant messenger conferences (chat) have become essential. For these aims, on one hand, a series of factors based on natural language processing (including lexical analysis and Latent Semantic Analysis) and data-mining have been taken into consideration. On the other h...

This study aimed at investigating the potential of collaborative and e-collaborative writing modalities in developing interactional complexity, utilization of interactional demonstrators and density of interaction. To this end, 66 Iranian intermediate female English as foreign language learners (EFL) were selected to participate in this study according to their scores on Oxford Placement Test (...
متن کاملThe Effect of Interaction on Lexical Acquisition
This research showed that appropriate input and suitable contexts for interaction among students can lead to successful second language acquisition (SLA). This study based on Swain's (2005) notion of collaborative dialogue, aimed to study whether EFL learners participating in negotiation of meaning based tasks collaborate with each other and, if so, to investigate the role of this behavior in ...
متن کاملComputer-assisted evaluation of CSCL chat conversations
Although instant messaging is a very popular tool for collaboration and it has been used for a wide variety of CSCL tasks, there are only a few applications for assisting the tutors in evaluating the conversations of the students. Due to the difficulty of this task, chat is seldom used in a formal education context. In order to tackle this problem, several applications were developed which assi...
